I need to store my metal clarinets. My options are limited.
I would like opinions on which of the following would
be best:
option 1: basement (humid some times of year.
relativly constant temp.)
Option 2: attic (can be very hot in summer.
probably stays above 50 in winter)
Option 3: Breezway (only heated during the day in the winter: below freezing at night.)

i would rather have my horn under my bed then those options
if you are worried about moisture, (too much) try getting hold of some desicant...in the basement you may find that silverfish will just eat your pads to bits (usually higher humidity and undisturbed...attic, the heat will dry out the glue in your pads....then you are in for a full pad job...

I'm thinking the basement could be an option if and only if you took some precautions. For example, a dehumidifier might be a must-- and maybe even you'd want to seal the clarinet in a plastic bag or something similar, to keep out the creepy-crawlies.
The other options sound pretty extreme.

Hi Jim
Living 300m from the sea can give one severe humidity/rust problem on firearms. Placing a 40W bulb at the bottom of the cupboard keeps the temp above dewpoint and the rust at bay. The cupboard is well ventilated so there is minimal increase in temp - maybe 5 - 7 degrees Centigrade. For safety fit a wire gauze screen about 6" above the lamp.
Worth a try - creepy crawlies also tend to avoid the light.
