Selmer 9 vs Buffet Festival, Yamaha SEV, SE, CSV

I play a 40 year old Selmer Series 9 with a quite open mp. I am happy with the sound for swing, pop, dixieland, etc music which I mostly play. Of the more modern instruments (Buffet Festival, Yamaha SEV, Leblanc LL,etc) which would give me similar tone and ease of blowing.

I think the "LL" since the bore is larger than the others you mention (.584) Therefore, it should be more similar to your Series 9. Although, you may want to try the SEV. I was very impressed by the eveness of sound when play testing one a while back.

Stan -

Leblanc has recently introduced the "Big Easy" model, which is a successor to the large-bore Pete Fountain model. I haven't tried one (and I'm not a jazz player), but there have been some good reports here about it. If you try it, let us know what you think.

Best regards.

I'm also thinking that the LL is the only non-polycylindrical bore model among the ones you named. In that regard, it is most similar to your Series 9.

I've not tried the Yamaha, but have played and owned Selmer 9s and Leblanc LLs and currently have a Festival. The Festival is very easy blowing and has a nice big tone that fits well with big band, jazz and other style music. It's very nice.

Got a nice Yamaha Oehler system. Easy to blow good tonal variation great keywork. Still trying to work out the altissimo above A. Good value for money, good professional's horn.

Yamaha's attention to detail in the finish of there instruments is excellent, having owned a Buffet and a Yam, I have found that the finish of the toneholes and the quality of the plating on my CS-V is second to none.
