Is there an reference book on clarinets? One that explains what the different barrel sizes do to the sound. Or ratings on mouthpieces and clarinet brands. Or what the different woods & polywhatever stuff does to the sound. I'm a returning player and having a blast! But I want to learn more about the instrument and what you all are talking about. Thanks! Paul

There are many wonderful reference books around, The Clarinet Companion is one,
also try the book by David Pino on Clarinet Playing and care...well written, informative. The biography on Bonade is interesting as well..

there are lots of books- but none of them are what i would call "definative". Two ideas- what about trying to find a library that has the Clarinet Mag (ICA magazine) in it- your local university library might? Reading the back issues of this is a great source of info (much better than the internet i have to say).
Another idea- sure all the books by Pino etc are good (i actually really like the David Pino book, except for the fact that it is written in a style that makes me feel about 14 years old, this might be because i first read it when i was 14 years old???), but there is a really good book by Tom Ridenouer. I only got a quick look at it but it's on my "to buy" list. Mr R is very good at explaining things clearly and has a great understanding of reeds/instruments/playing. I couldn't say if this is exactly what you are looking for, but check it out.
