hi guys,
i am thinking about creating a board game for young clarinet players. the playing peices would be on the lines of monopoly..like a little clarinet, a ligature, a carrycase, reed etc...all in miniature of course. the game would consist of musical questions (basic theory)and some they would have to answer by playing their clarinet...like a scale or a popular song (yankee doodle) from memory. getting the answer right will bring them across the board of staves and clefs, notes and other musical things.
i have 2 questions... what do you think of my idea? and will playing the clarinet briefly without swabbing each time harm the clarinet? it would be a pain to have to stop the game to do this each time.
what do you guys think?

Why limit the game to just clarinets? Music theory is music theory even if you are singing or (gasp) playing trumpet.
If this is a game to teach young clarinetists proper usage and techniques perhaps swabbing every so often isn't that bad an idea. You need to find a way to keep it fun. Some penalty if you haven't swabbed and land on a square or pass the square - something to encourage swabbing every so many minutes.
I think this is going to be tough to develop and be somewhat limited if only for clarinetists - hey how about basic game and and add-on's for various sections. Then you could have a brass / trumpet add-on if it became popular.
Sorry programmer designing an object oriented game.....

I think it sounds pretty cool. I also like the idea of including other instruments. Band kids seem to spend a lot of time together anyway. I don't think playing briefly without swabbing will do much harm if any, just swab at the end. Personal opinion.

That sounds like an awesome game. I could totally picture my bandmates lining up to play that game during lunch (which is always in the band room...it's really quite amazing, it seems almost everyone from band vistits the band room at least briefly during lunch on a daily basis...) Anyway, that would really cool. And I agree that including other instruments could make it better. But decisions like including other instruments and whether or not to swab depend on who you are gearing it at. If you want to go for beginners only then swabbing and focusing on one instrument would be good. But for experianced players (like my high school bandmates) I would expand the game to suit all instruments. Maybe there could be two versions of the game. Anyway, once you've targeted your audience you can make the appropriate decisions. Bottom line, it sounds like a cool game.

Like everyone else says, I think it would be a cool game. I think this would also be an original game too, I don't know of any others. I would love to help out, e-mail me if you need any thing!

I think that's a good idea. You might want to make it a game for every kind of insturment there is. Yeah, it would be a lot of work, but it would be worth it. I think that would also be a good game like to give to the teachers who are teaching players how to play. This game could be a great learning experience, and it would be a lot of fun!! Like someone said above, I think that it wouldn't do to much harm to the insturment. Just swab at the end!!

thanks for your thots everyone. expanding the game for other instruments and different versions is something for me to think about. i hadn't actually given much thot to manufacturing a game.(but, hey...ya never know:)
i teach my 2 neices clarinet (but im not a "real" teacher) and i was thinking of a fun way to explain the circle of 5ths by using a paper plate to draw the diagram and a spinner in the middle. that got me to thinking of other fun ways to explain music when i thot of a board game as a teaching tool.
i'm going to give it a try.
oh, and by the way....if anyone knows of any fun music/art projects i would be interested to hear them.
