My son inherited a Jeffry clarinet from my brother, who bought it new over 30 years ago. It is made of wood and has a very good tone. Does anyone have any information on this horn, and is it considered a beginner's horn, or an intermediate horn?

I have two of these. The one I have restored, was acquired from the original owner who stated it was puchased new in 1947. It has a good tone. Most of the minor intonation problems I found were taken care of by simple pad heigth adjustment. I use it for my back-up horn. I'd give you the serial # but it's on loan to a young music major who just lost her new Buffet when her car was burglerized. NEVER leave an instrument in a car. If the heat doesn't get it, some idiot will!

The Jeffrey was the entry level wooden clarinet from the Leblanc Paris works, and priced lower than the Normandy.
I have seen similar LH pinky keys on some later-production examples of the Normandy 7.
Leblanc had a long run of entry level wooden instruments at varying price points that were essentially the same as the Noblet 40/45, differing only in keywork details. I own, or have owned, an ebonite Model 11, plastic Model 11, plastic 14P, and wooden 1948-type Normandys and one can mix and match the joints, barrels, and bells between them, as well as with those from the plastic Vito 7214.

I recently acquired one of these, and our local instrument shop (decades of experience) said it was more of an intermediate to advanced, worth about $450-500.

Please note that the Jeffrey was a replacement for the Normandy 6 and Normandy 7 models, and wasn't launched until around 1964 or 1965.
