Reed upgrading strenght 2.5 to 3

Dear people. When I started to play clarinet about 9-10 months ago, I used a Leblanc 4L mouthpiece with Vandoren 3 reed. But this was not ideal as it cost me a lot of energy only to produce a rather windy or airy sound. So after a month or two I switched to Vandoren 2.5 and that made things a lot easier, allowing me to improve technical aspects and also embouchure. A rather fantastic change ocurred when I switched to the 2550K-10M mouthpiece, still using Vandoren 2.5. Brenda already told me that one day I should move up to a combination with Vandoren 3 and this finally happened a few days ago when I was experimenting with some reeds. My sound is highly improved -now it really sounds like a clarinet- and I am very glad. I have no teacher so I depend on the very interesting and helpfull comments made on the board. I learned that with practice the improvements will come automatically and that it is important not to get frustrated if it takes just a little more time than you initially expected.

Hans -

You're doing it the right way. Far too many people make reed strength into a contest -- "I'm playing something too hard for you, you wimp."

You play what works easily and sounds good for you. *Lots* of excellent players play on really soft reeds.

Best regards.

Good choice,

I've done the same choice 6 months ago, after having played 5 years on bricks, and I've made lot's of progress.

Stiffness of reeds don't improve your sound. Typicall example : Giora Feidmann. He' the player that probably plays the softest reeds on the market, and isn't his tone just beautifull ?
Softer reeds make the response better and make simple things like tonghing and breathing easier. Same with tuning on high notes: if you have a good embouchure it's not a problem.
I play now viotto n1 with #3 reeds from vandoren white master. I get upto top C without any effort, and on the tuner, if I check high notes, they are often too high than what they should be.
