I don't know from a professional standpoint, but I personally work on two or three a year, depending on difficulty. Near audition dates I normally focus on the audition peices, though.

This year I have worked on about 6 or 7 pieces, some of them I knew before though.

This year I have the (mis?)fortune of having an extremely busy winter, where I'll need to have prepared 4 group I pieces. In the span of two months, I have two auditions and two concerts. This isn't really the norm for winter, but it is how things are turning out. Usually I do a couple pieces in the winter, and two or three in the summer. Of course, I do not always go horribly in depth with my study. usually I will focus on one, and do the research on style, background study, etc. The other is more relaxed, where my focus isn't completely notes more than making music and enjoying it. This helps me from burnout, I find.

Depends on the pieces!!!!!!!! Some may need a lot more attention than others. I do about 1 or two per year

I usually work on only 1 each year for solo and ensemble....my teacher doesn't really like to work on solos a lot. She wants to do the fundelmentals. She says that if I can do fundelmentals good then I can do the solos. But I have some pieces that I like to play around with, but she doesn't listen to those pieces at lessons. (I hope all that made sense )

Definitely depends on the pieces... and are you including etudes? I usually learn one concerto (honor band auditions!), a solo of my choice for the Solo & Ensemble Festival, plus quite a few etudes... sometimes I also might play a duet or small ensemble piece for Showcase of the Arts (a talent show my school does which is only open to people in the performing arts).
