 new mouthpiece

My clarinet professor wants me to try some different clarinet mouthpieces. I currently play an M15 mouthpiece with V12 4's and a Rovner ligature on a Buffet R-13. I love the sound of my M15, as does my professor, but it's not big enough for orchestral playing, which I'll be starting soon. I've tried a B45, a Portnoy, and a 5RV, none of which i liked. Any suggestions for a bigger sound? (Besides more air, which I know could always be improved!!) Also, where do you recommend buying them?

I wonder why a M15, B40 and 5RV is not suitable for orchestra playing. I use either a M15 or 5RV to play with my orchestra. The audience at the back portion of the concert hall can hear me playing.

The M15 is used by many players in orchestras as well as other mouthpieces of similar facing and design. You might also try different reeds, perhaps traditional cut Vandorens, or another brand. I see on www.vandoren.com they recommend V12 4, 4.5,5. You might try a slightly harder reed. If you determine that you really need to look at new mouthpieces, try contacting some of the mouthpieces guys who sponsor this site. (Smith, Grabner, Hill) Clark Fobes makes great stuff and is very knowledgeable and easy to deal with. Try giving him a call. Good Luck.

A B40 is a great mouthpiece to check out. It is as open as a B45 but has a more pleasing sound in my opinion. It is certainly loud enough and has a nice ring to the sound. Many years back I asked the same qquestion you just did and a lot of people mentioned the B40. Another option is to try the M30 which has a similar sonority as the B40 but uses harder reeds.

Tonal projection is more a result of clarity and quality of sound, rather than sheer volume. It may be that you need to adjust your embouchure--not necessarily only your reed/mpc set-up--for optimum projection. Try practicing with a double lip embouchure for short periods of time, and then try to transfer the resulting clarinethy into our regular embouchure. The focus should be to use more upper lip in your conventional method and less upper tooth. This will enhance the clarity of your sound and give you more tonal projection without overblowing.

Give Morgan a whirl. They rule.

David Hite is excellent and his D facing is truly a powerful yet warm sounding mouthpiece...

Vandoren M30s are nice, but I have found them a bit resistant....

overall I use my Hite the most in orchestra and can say it feels the closest to the Chedeville I have that used to work ......

remeber you have to find what is the most comfortable and works with ease....B40s are nice but pretty resistant....

D Dow-

Are you using the same size reeds on the Hite D as you did on the B40. Also did you have to make any compromises in tone and projection when switching to the less resistant Hite? I like how the B40 has many options in terms of tone color. This is helpful when I play jazz stuff. Is the Hite as versatile

I have an M15 as well as a Vandoren B45. The M15 I bought thinking that a closer lay and flatter pitch may help(I play on an RC Prestige which is hard to keep down to A440 under lights).

I would like to say I made the M15 work but so far I have had no luck. I have to use the short barrel to play in tune. The tone I find dull and it seems to lack the clarity of articulation that I can get with the B45.

On the positive side the upper register is more secure and the sound seems to have a more secure legato quality.

To be fair I have played B45's for years and probably need to give more attention to the M15.

If I'm not wrong, Clark Fobes don't really deal in direct orders for his mouthpiece nowadays. I emailed him to ask if I can get one and he replied to say his mouthpieces are available at Muncy Winds.

But of course it will be cheaper if you get it at one of the retailers as their prices are lower than the recommended retail price.

The only way to know for sure is to call or email him. Even if you had to order from somewhere else he could let you know what may work best for you based on your needs.

I'm currently using Gonzales 2 3/4 with an M15 on an R13 and am quite happy with the combo.
