 tuning

i just got my first tuner. its made by "sabine" and its very easy to use. I especially like the feature where it allows beginners le-way for tuning. its comparable to a bullseye target, with advanced players and professionals needing to hit the bullseye and beginners and intermediates just getting on the target or as close to the middle as possible.
heres my question....i know that beginners often play out of tune even when the instrument is perfectly ok. But when do you know if its you (embouchure), the reed (too soft/hard)....making the notes play out of tune, or when its the instrument itself?
i mean, i am intermediate/advanced and have a new instrument to play test this week and if im not hitting the bullseye, how am i to know if its me or the instrument.?
thanks
JL

Well, where is your OTHER (the one you had used until this trial) instrument? How do you tune on it?

i just got my first tuner yesterday. so ive never have actually tuned on my "old" clarinet. in cl choir we play the tuning note and adjust accordingly and in wind symphony the director has a tuner and tells me if im flat or sharp. but that still doesnt tell me if its me or the instrument.

being in tune is more than just hitting a certain bulls eye. in whatever groups you play in you will all have to play out of tune together.

My tuner is tuned to the concert "A", they was I know it's me is if my mouth fells funny. If thats the case, I adjust. If I feel fine, then I adjust the barral on my horn. It usually works once you get used to this procedure.
Good luck of your test!
