 Pomarico "2" Info Needed
Author: Gordon (NZ)

I have a customer who has a bought an old Buffet 10S with a Pomarico"2" crystal mouthpiece which seems to have the effect of making reeds 1 to 2 digits higher in 'hardness'.

Is anybody familiar enough with Pomaricos to tell me more about this mouthpiece, and its suitability for a 55-year-old player returning recreationally to the instrument after at least a 15 year break.

if i remember correctly the "2" has a middle of the road tip opening, with a shorter length lay and a a "step" rather than a "ramp" at the base of the windway, giving it quite a bit of resistance (although that might be called the "2*" or something).

Gordon, you must mean a Selmer 10S or another Buffet model. mw

I have, and use, a bunch of crystal Pomaricos of various facings on soprano clarinet, as well as one on bass clarinet (a Mitchell Lurie 'stencil' mouthpiece). I can't comment specifically on the #2 facing. If had to make a general comment about the Pomaricos I've played (and like all generalizations there are numerous exceptions), I'd say that they do tend to be rather resistant, but sound beautiful, look and feel terrific, and are very well made. And of course, DO NOT drop them, ever! If 'free-blowing' is the most important criterion for a particular player, though, I'd have to advise him/her to look elsewhere.

Thanks. Selmer C85 is very popular here. Do you reckon 95 is a better choice?
