This might be a really stupid question, but I hear a lot of talking about the `German` and the `French` style. Does anyone know the difference? What`s your favourite style of playing?

Well I don't know either and neither does my teacher.........but since they have different key set ups there has to be something in the way its played and probably sounds - I look forward to seeing what answers you get

Cheers

I studied in Paris france for 15 months with guy Dangain and robert Fontaine who both played in the big Orchestre National de France. What was most noticable is the total alteration going on at the time in the French sound...many players were looking in France at that time for a darker more germanic style sound. At that time I also took from Hans deinzer a few lessons and this was tough for his english was broken...but now the French sound is certainly different than say 20 years ago and with the popularity of darker facings like the B40 and M15 one could say the older 5RV style sound is in the ascendant...however, within France now there is a greater variety of styles of playing, in terms of tone, and, this mainly because Vandoren has such a wide variety of mouthpieces. This is pretty well the situation...so compare the tone of Pascal Moragues(very germanic)of Orch. de Paris with say the old thinnner sound of Andre Boutard and you would wonder if they came from the same continent let alone the same school. These differences I think are wonderful...they can also be found within Germany if to a somewhat lesser expent. The Dutch sound seems to be a middle ground and worth investigating but again
