There was a recent fascinating discussion on this board about the suitability of oboe d'amor music for the A clarinet. That got me thinking that French horn music would probably sing well on the basset horn in F. Anyone had any experience?

No doubt it would "sing", there is much great French Horn music. It could be played on an alto cl, of course, using the same one-note-higher, add-two-sharps transposition many of us use reading C music on Bb [if only to see how it sounds. Don

This is a great idea. We clarinetists have a lot of music at our disposal, but not enough so-called "big" pieces (pieces with a deep pedagogical content, representative of a significant moment in the history of music and the exploration of major composers). Pianists and violonists are the best served in this department.
Fortunately, there seems to be a movement out there to bring some amazing music to the clarinet world. If it is done well, in a manner respectul of the original intent of the composers and of the nature of the clarinet itself, our horizon can be broadened for the benefit of eveybody.
At the moment, my personal favorite "big" additions to the clarinet repertoire are:
Bach: Concerto for oboe d'amore in A Major (no recording that I know)
Mozart: Sonata for violon and piano KV 378 (no recording that I know)
Beethoven: Sonata for violon and piano OP. 24. (no recording that I know)
Beethoven: Concerto for violon in D Major (as recorded by Collins)
Schubert: Sonata "arpegionne" (Korodey-Kreutzer, who transposed it down half a tone, making it much better for clarinetist - the way Stoltzman and Ax recorded it).
Prokofiev: Sonata for flute and piano Op 84 (Keenan, as recorded by Comb).
Look at the nature of this music and imagine having a good mastery of these pieces: They are major work and clarinetists can only benefit from learning them.
The idea of adapting horn music to the basset horn is absolutely fanastic.

Very well put, Mario, I read your comments elsewhere on the BB and profited there also. I heard Stolzman's recording of some operatic gems, Flower Song from Carmen, in particular, brought tears to my eyes even tho I dont know all the words!! At our comm. band reh., I frequently "doodle" with the Nocturne theme , Mid Summer N D, to get a fine F H player to play it right! There are many! Don

Talking of the Flower Song, that opens with a Cor Anglais (in F). Ahh....just imagine that on a basset horn instead............
