Yep, that's what LW said about Pete Fountain. Even though this video was uploaded 4 years ago, last night it had only 417 views. This afternoon it had 441. So perhaps you haven't seen this one.
IMO, those first few bars of the song had to be a bit boring for Pete because he played the notes completely legit.
Watch for the expression on the guitarist's face to his left when when Pete leaves the legit playing and starts improvising.

I'm embarrassed to say that I can't remember this little detail (didn't expect to lose things like this from recall)....
It was either Pete who told Tim Laughlin to put a smile on every note, or...
Tim Laughlin who said about Pete, "He put a smile on every note." (I think this is the correct one).
Either way, it's a great way to think of Pete's playing.
