 A Poll

I Was wondering what clarinets everyone play on, and why they like them, and what type of groups you play in.
I have been playing classical and Jazz for 20 years. I play on a R-13 that came out the first year they were made with a 5rv mouthpiece and vondoren 5 reeds.

My set-up:

A pair of rosewood Rossi, R-13-like bore (called American Bore by Mr. Rossi)
A Gregory Smith wood mouthpiece (from a Zinner blank with Karpar-inspired spec.
Rovner ED II ligature (no plate, flaps on top of the rail (I like it dark...)
Legere Reeds (the new cut, not the old one), 3.75 (Legere has improved his reeds lately)

My medium:

I play mostly chamber music in small groups (piano, soprano, viola, other clarinetists). I used to play a lot of Jazz when I was young. Got tired of its predictability and shallowness, but I dable a bit in it now and then in order to please my audience (much flaming expected here). Still regularly throw on the player an Ambersold CD to have fun and to relax without pressure. Love the Bossa Nova stuff.

My current projects:

1 Schubert "Arpeggione sonata", Korodey-Kreutzer adaptation (delightful)
2 Bach "Concerto in A Major" for Oboe d'amore (a must piece for the A cl.)
3 Schumann "Fairy Tales" op. 132 (piano, viola and clarinet) (vintage romantic)
4 Spohr "Six German Songs" (piano, soprano and clarinet) (sublime)
5 Kovacs "Hommage a Manuel de Fala" (solo clarinet) (amazing)

My next big event:

A christmas concert where I will play 1 and 5.

My master piece (the piece that I have played the best in public so far):

Beethoven "Sonata in F op. 24 "Spring"", Korodey-Krutzer adaptation (very pretty)

I am just a serious amateur who loves classical music in general and the clarinet in particular. I have access to professional level musicians with whom I can tackle some wonderful music decently.

I use a Patricola CL-7 c-clarinet to play in a variety of ensembles to accompany folk dancers. I am in a number of groups that play celtic reels and jigs for New England contra and square dancing; also play some Balkan stuff. Lately starting to play for vintage ballroom dancing - hambos, schottisches, tangos, waltzes, rags, etc. - what they were probably playing on the Titanic before it sank. There is a very large and active folk dance community here in Philadelphia, making all this possible. The "C" facilitates playing a lot of music without transposing, and in reasonable keys, as strings are the typical instruments for all of this stuff. I get to read melodies but invent harmonies. I get a lot of freedom as far as interpretation and veering from the written note, as well. I have gone back and forth from open to close to open lay mp's again. My current mp is a Woodwind K-10-M, medium open (I think). I use a blue box Vandoren 3 with that and a Rovner lig. I used a Selmer HS*, very closed, with a Vandoren 4 for a while. Ultimately too hard to blow for very long, but it really helped develop my embouchure, stamina and intonation.

I also have Buescher student model alto sax I play very badly, use it only for harmonizing. Also a Conn C-melody I play just as badly, and it's naturally out of tune, despite being worked on. Also a Woodwind Sop sax that I no longer bring to gigs or rehearsals for fear of being asked to not come back. Soft reeds, Rovner ligs, and non-fancy mp's on all of those, if you must know.

Finally, I still play the Bb clarinet I've had since my school days, an Evette Schaeffer from the 60's, my parents paid $150 for new. No, it's not for sale. Use the K-10-M currently on that. I play it for accompaniment with the choir I belong to, which sings Jewish music, both liturgical and other. In a "talent show" our choir had, I organized a group to play the klezmer tune "Kolomeike", and got to use my Bb on that.

hey, I'm the peon college freshman who frankly, plays soprano because they won't let her play only bass. For the time being I've got a Buffet international, hoping to have the money for a better horn sometime in the next year, w/ a B45, V12 3s, and a rovner. For bass I'm still using the horn on loan from my high school (on the promise that I'll bring it back before I go to college), w/a Bundy 3 (for lack of $$ for a better mpc), a rovner, and I'm still trying to find reeds that I like my sound on. Last ensemble I played in was, uh, the Saint Edmond High School Concert Band. Played alto for marching band (as I will be this fall again) and pep band, and tenor for jazz band (which i will NEVER do again :). in about a month i'll be a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, as well as whichever ensemble I'm put into...that remains to be seen

I play on a stock R13 with the thumb rest moved up about a 1/4". Use accubore eddie daniels classic barrell and/or a Chadash 66 mm. Rovner EDII lig. Johnston, Eddie Daniels (he made 3 excellent MPs for me) or Richard Hawkins mps. Vandoren V12 #3s or Olivieri 3-3/12s. Use a claricord neckstrap sometimes on jazz gigs.

Projects:

5 pieces for clarinet by William O. Smith
Opperman studies
Spohr #1 in C minor
Quartet for the End of Time by Messiaen (underplayed, a great piece of chamber music!)
Bach (classical studies for clarinet edited by H. Voxman, Rubank)

Shameless plug: The Working Clarinetist by Peter Hadcock, Roncorp publishers (you can buy a copy from Sneezy sponsor VanCott Information Services). Has a wealth of orchestra excerpt material to keep one busy for many moons. Excellent book.

Also play a lot of jazz on clarinet in practice, but on sax in performance. Since Cl. is my major axe, I find that if I have a jazz gig coming up on sax, that it's just as beneficial to shed on cl, and then 2-3 days on sax as the date approaches. I LOVE the selmer model 53 Soprano!! A great horn. Also play a Mark VI alto 147***
Am considering the Peter Eaton International cl, it's warm and intonation is great.

I have a Selmer 37 bass clarinet with a Hite mouthpiece and Glotin reeds. My parents bought me a Buffet R-13 for graduation, which I won't get to use this first semester at college. :( I'm still experimenting with reeds because I'm not satisfied with the consistency of my tone. Sorry to hear you won't get to play bass right off in college Ashley! I turned down four colleges because they said the bass is an "auxillary" instrument. grrrr..... The last ensemble I was in was a bass clarinet trio that performed at a Shakespeare festival. (Free tickets!) I'm trying to fight the memories of high school band. You know it's time to leave when half the band is confused by the statement "Play a concert Bb scale." My next gig is with the Colorado State marching band. GO RAMS!!!

I play on an R13 and love it though I haven't tried many other brands which isn't good but then if I do I might find something I like better and desire it-problem is that I can't afford another new clarinet right now (stinks being a poor college student) and I am happy with my Buffet-it is quite dear to me! I use a 5RV mouthpiece-took awhile to get used to but I like it-with Vandoren traditional 4 reeds and a Bonade inverted ligature. Currently I am not playing anything because of all my wrist problems however I am in love with the Weber quintet and also the Stravinsky 3 Pieces. This will change as it always does on a regular basis! :-) So for now I'm doing some really boring tonguing exercises on the mouthpiece and a barrel and that's about it (sigh.)

I have a Buffet Festival, currently a Rovner dark, or black Luyben ligature, depending on the mood I'm in, a Greg Smith Kasper design, and Vandoren Blackmaster 3's.

Let's see, I'm working on Stamitz Concerto in Eb, Klose daily studies and, my marching band music memorization. Oh hey I just bought the first Weber Concerto and the Copland Concerto.
And I'm in Marching band, concert band and youth symphony orchestra.

I have an R-13 c.1978 as my main axe, using a Portnoy BP02 mpc and Zonda #4 reeds. (suffixes M and N) I recently switched from a Rovner to a Vandoren Optimum ligature. I sometimes use Legere #4s during doubling situations where the clarinet gets very light use. Bass Cl. is a Yamaha plastic with a B45 mpc and #3 Legere reeds.

Group activities vary. Most professional work is as on tenor/soprano sax in an R&B band, and bari/alto sax in a big band. Not much paying work on clarinet in this town, but I get some theatre work and toured for about 6 months in '99. Luckily, my section mate in the R&B band is also a clarinetist and we do a few things such as "Two Funky People" together. I play clarinet and bass clarinet mostly in community bands, and with impromptu chamber groups--mostly using off-the-shelf music.

Projects:
Dusting off Weber Concerto #1
Writing clarinet/sax quartets to teach 'jamming' skills to my students (sans rhythm section)
Arranging Buster Bailey's "The Dizzy Debutante" as a clarinet solo with concert band.
Maintenance of online educational activities at http://www.jamschool.net

Bass Clarinet: Chabot with Pillinger mouthpiece (after Howarth)
Basset Horn: Buffet Prestige with Pillinger mouthpiece.

Play in a variety of chamber music, an amateur orchestra in London (clar and bass), and in various orchestras for bass.

Current project: clarinet quintets in general, but the Gordon Jacob in particular.

I have a brand new Buffet Festival clarinet with a Vandoren M13 mouthpiece, Eddie Daniels Rovner ligature, and either Vandoren V.12 #4 or Rico Grand Concert Thick Blank #4 1/2 reeds.
I'll be looking for a new mouthpiece soon once I catch up on all my bills.

I'm not playing with any ensemble right now due to my training programs for my job. Once those are done, I'll play with a local community band.

Okay, very small, not to mention odd, collection, but here it goes. Remember that to each man his own preference, no matter how atypical it may be.

Bb:
Selmer Bundy Resonite model, 1960ish
Generic mouthpeice
LaVoz 2s
Generic Ligature

EEb Contra:
Selmer Bundy Resonite, age unknown
Selmer C* Mouthpeice
LaVoz 3.5s (I think. It's been awhile since I bought new ones.)
Cloth Ligature with "4RS" stamped on it. That's all I know.

I told you it was odd. The Bundies are for lack of decent finances, but I can get a very "unique" sound with them.

Hey everyone,

It is very cool to see everyone's setup. I currently play on Yamaha clarinets, Custom AE on b-flat, and my A is a model 72. I just recently bought a Gregory Smith #1 mouthpiece (where have you been all my life?). I play Vandoren 3.5's, I am currently trying to decide if the traditional or V-12 is better for my outfit, currently trying V-12's. I am going back to music school after a LONG layoff and I have the audition coming up, currently working on Copeland Concerto, Mozart, and many, many excerpts. For technique I use the Baermann and Jeanjean "Vade-mecum." I currently play in a community orchestra and I hope to be selected to play in the orchestra at school. Sorry to all you band folks out there, I just prefer orch's.

Later,

Jerry McD.

I play in concert band, marching band, sometimes orchestra, & solo/ensemble. My current projects are the Weber Concerto #1 & memorizing my marching music for next year's season :)

I play a Buffet R-13, Richard Hawkins B Mouthpiece, Eddie Daniels Rovner ligature, and Vadoren V-12 4s.

I like the R-13 because it allows a lot of air to easily flow through the bore and has a wonderfull tone.

I go to the Interlochen Arts Academy and studied with Richard Hawkins there last year. I will be a senior there next year.

I have played in orchestras, wind ensembles, wind chamber groups, and symphony bands. I have also played with piano.

First, I am 71 years old and don't have to prove anything to anyone -- I've already done it and play just to have fun now. In my early days I had experience playing in sympnonies, opera orchestras, concert bands, jazz (big bands) groups, etc.

I have a Selmer center tone which I purchased for my sister in 1954 which she gave back to me after she graduated fom high school. I like its sound and control. I also play a 1946 Buffet for the same reasons.

My mouthpiece is a Selmer crystal HS* which I purchased in 1947. I've used it for so long that I know exactly what it is capable of doing. I usually play either Mitchell Lurie or Zonda reeds.

My projects for the future is to teach others the intricacies of the clarinet and help them learn where I can. I am also retired from teaching band in schools for 37 years and currently the director of a community band.

Other than that I find various tasks at which to keep busy and occupied. I have very few dull monents in life because I'm too busy doing the things I like and enjoy, especially teaching.

Isn't that after all the best way to be?

My credentials: I am a student of Lavergne High School, TN. I play tuba for a marching band and contrabass for the concert band. (Odd combination, but go with what works.) I played the same for an orchestra and hope to join again as a clarinet next year. I play for the school's clarinet choir. I know, it's not impressive, but I too am going for what I most enjoy. Besides, soon enough it'll be time for college.

Buffet R13 Bb and A from the 60's, Chicago Kaspar 14 w/ Vandoren Regular or Grand Concert 3 1/2's (large ensemble), Bay MOM w/ Vandoren Regular or Grand Concert 3's (chamber music), Chadash 67mm barrel on the Bb

Buffet R13 Eb from the 60's, Mitchell Lurie Premium Mouthpiece, Vandoren Regular 3's and 3 1/2's

Selmer Paris C, Bay MOM Mpc., Rigotti Gold 3 Medium reeds

Noblet Bass, Mitchell Lurie Premium Mpc, Zonda 3 1/2 tenor sax reeds

King Marigaux Alto (clarinet), Chedeville Buffet Mpc., Zonda 3 1/2 alto sax reeds

I use Rovner Dark ligatures on everything.

This summer, I am playing in a community summer band. During the school year, I play in two community orchestras (soprano and harmony clarinets, alto and tenor sax as needed) and a variety of ad hoc chamber groups at Saint Louis University (where I teach accounting). I have also recently started to play with a woodwind quintet made up of members in one of the orchestras I play with and I sometimes get paying gigs in pit orchestras.

Currently working on:

Weber "Concertino" (performance with the summer band tomorrow night)
Castelnuovo-Tedesco "Sonata" (audition piece)
Copland "Concerto" (so I won't have to use the Mozart in auditions)
von Koch "Monolog" (because it's great fun)
Veale "Concerto" (because it reminds me of Hitchcock movies)
Various exercise books, including Rose, Baermann, Hamelin, Bitsch

Hmmm....this is an interesting poll. I must say I've never been terribly attracted to fussing with gear. I find something that works and stick with it until it starts to fade. A couple of years ago I acquired a Vand. B45 dot. I love it, particularly with V12 3's. I also have a JB, but rarely use that because I have no time to practice with it, and due to my laziness (i.e., not buying 1-1/2 strength reeds), it sounds really gross, even with my Turkish G clarinet... A friend told me he asked this great Turkish player (Barbaros Erkose) what mp he used, and he said Vand. B45, but only the Profile 88. I may need to try one of those.

I know people who find the JB's too closed for some Balkan and Turkish music. They sand down the JB tips themselves. Any hints for how I can do this without scaring myself?

Main axe: Buffet R13, from 1969...I've had this horn for 18 years...it's a part of me.

My A clarinet, which I hate, is from 1985. I also have a Turkish G horn and a H.P. Bflat Albert I picked up on Ebay recently. I have my father-in-law's old metal Boehm, and my very first Selmer signet horn from 6th grade.

Lig: Bonade inverted (what else? hehe)

I quit playing classical 10 years ago. It was too stressful for me, and I felt the need to have more creative control over the music I played and how I play it. In 1994 I discovered Balkan music. Can't get me off of the stuff now! Particularly Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Albanian, but I delve into the Greek and Turkish also!

Ulimately, the music is more important to me than the setup, as long as the setup is comfortable!

I play an R-13... just bought it new last year! I use a Hite Premiere mp (I own a Vanduran B-45 but I just like the sound I get out of the Hite) and Vanduran #3 reeds. I bought the Hite mp back in 9th grade when I used a Yamaha plastic student clarinet, and somehow, even on my R-13, I still like it. I'm thinking about trying 3 1/2 reeds.
