Mozart Fragment KV 88

Hi everyone,

Recently I made a completion of the Fragment in A, KV Anhang 88. It's scored for basset clarinet, two violins, viola and cello. Although it has often been regarded as rejected sketch for the last movement of the Clarinet Quintet KV 581, it may also have been intended as a companion piece. The fragment shares the opening theme of Ferrando’s aria, no.24, from Cosi fan tutte, and is a divine melodic inspiration - perfect for the clarinet.

There is computer audio, a clarinet part and a short commentary about the process of completion.

I hope to perform and then publish it this year.

I wonder if any one else has encountered the view that Mozart's fragments are works that he felt were >>not worth<< completing? I don't think this is actually true. Rather, they represent opportunities which didn't come to fruition. Concerts which didn't eventuate... (Does that sound familiar?) We know that the detailed working out of the string quartets cost Mozart much effort, and we can see the same care and perfection in everything he wrote. So it was also about effective use of time.

Even with the computer generated sound, the work sounds beautiful.
It would be great to hear a live performance.

Thank you both for the generous words. I was particularly struck by Phurster's use of the word 'beautiful' because it is a bit out of fashion in Mozart performance today, or at least in writing about it. We all want to be 'rhetorical'... But I had a quick look and the word "Schönheit" or 'Beauty' crops up quite a bit in musical commentary of the period.

Of course it must have meant something different back then, but the emotional effect on the listener is the same.
