 Zurich clarinet/musical stores
Author: thousandwords

Hello everybody,

I am flying to Europe soon and I will have about a day to spend in Zurich.

I am in the market for a new Oehler clarinet (I would prefer an Austrian bore) and I was wondering if anybody knows of a good store in/near Zurich that might carry a few models of clarinets I could look at.

Thanks in advance!

The two biggest woodwind shops in Zürich are:

https://musikbucher.ch
https://www.musikhug-shop.ch/de/start.htm

But I don't think you'll have much luck finding Oehler clarinets there. Not far away in Winterthur they may have some:

Robert Stempfle has a small workshop in Zürich. I don't know if he has any Oehler clarinets in stock, but he has his own prototype instrument with (I believe) a German-style bore:

Blashaus in Luzern stock some Schwenk und Seggelke instruments. You should write to them to find out if they have any Oehler instruments:

if you have enough time, you could possibly go to Austria.
Vienna is (I think) too far, but there are a few clarinet shops not far from Zurich (4-5 hours).

IMO, if looking for an Austrian clarinet, I'd go to Austria.

I think most Swiss clarinetists use Boehm instruments - at least those I have seen video clips playing in the folk and polka scene are all using Boehms. Oehlers are very much a Germany-centric system.

Just because German is spoken in Switzerland, that does not necessarally carry over into clarinet usage when it comes to "German" systems.
