 Before & after refacing
Author: sonicbang
Date:   2022-01-07 17:29

While I was browsing on YouTube, I realized that while there are many videos on play testing mouthpieces and there are some on refacing technique, I couldn't find many with a before & after test made by the refacer. I thought it may be fun to make a video like that, I hope you will enjoy it.

It is hard to convey how hard the player is working to make a bad facing play. You can hear some but it is often subtle. The disgust before and the joy after helps to communicate the difference.

Absolutely right. After all, it seems this particular mouthpiece was rather used than unfinished. The rails were rounded and that indicates 10+ years of heavy use. It’s hard to imagine that anybody could play this mouthpiece in that condition successfully. Next time I will record the refacing process too to make it more interesting.

Mr. sonicbang, are you from Europe? Do you reface moutpieces?

While "stock" mouthpieces have gotten better over the years, there is a certain amount of variation where many of them could benefit from some facing work- balancing and adjusting the curve, etc. That video really illuminates how a mouthpiece that could be dismissed as junk can be a real gem. The same is true of reeds. A little adjustment can be a revelation.

Jura82,

Yes, Mark (sonicbang) lives in Hungary and had 4 mouthpieces for sale in the ad section of the BB. I purchased one of them and asked him to do a fairly major refacing job for me to make it have the least resistance. It's on its way and I'm looking forward to receiving it.

I corrected the country.

Hi Jura82,

I live in Europe/Hungary. I do reface mouthpieces and occasionally sell some tweaked vintage ones. If you have any questions, you can write me anytime to szavinm@yahoo.com

Check out Brad Behn”s Facebook Blog from mid September, 2021. He is refacing two mouthpieces: A Chedeville Artistic Facing and a Chedeville Beau Arts. The next video shows him playing his great Epic mouthpiece with the two mentioned for comparison. Very fascinating!

Wow, thanks for drawing my attention to this video! I'm a big fan of Brad's work, he keeps setting new standards in mouthpiece craftsmanship. His video demonstrates well that not just he brought back the vintage sound and feel but also made serious improvements on the classics.
