A short while back I purchased a wonderful, A. Robert clarinet - complete with original (I believe) case and mouthpiece. (The case has a metal plate where it latches engraved with Robert's name and his atelier address in Paris.)
Because this clarinet is a keeper for me, I sent the very nice but tired case off to Martin Ashworth in the UK to have it restored. In the process, Mr. Ashworth found a date of 31 March 1912 on the lid under the padding. This is pretty common with vintage cases and luggage.
My clarinet is serial number 2746, so I'm content with giving it a manufacture date of 1912.
btw, the clarinet plays great imho.
