in anticipation of community band restating in 2 months after covid.=i bought a used k&n bass clair stand from reverb . it arrived today and i am blown away by the quality and adjustibility. plan to switch between alto clarinet and bass so a stand is mandatory. now i see why this stand cost nearly 200$ new. its top quality!

Did you get a new or used K&M bass clarinet stand?

I've got three of the older all metal (nickel plated) ones, each one with a different style cup - one has a small black painted cast metal cup with slots in it which are no good for some floor spikes. The others I found used - one has a small rectangular rubber lined cup which is curved on the two longest sides to take bassoons. The third is a rubber lined bowl.

I usually take a spare along with me whenever doing pit work as chances are there's always going to be someone on bass clarinet or bassoon without one and faffing around trying to use their case or even a sax stand with little success when it means quick instrument changes.

As well as bass clarinet, I use them for alto, basset horn (which all have floor spikes) and also the regular bassoon/bass clarinet one for contrabassoon with the top bracket widened so the contra slots in sideways (by the LH main action/thumb keys).

Their designated contra one has a much wider bracket so the instrument goes in widthways - the new style plastic bracket can't be widened to accept a contra like the older metal ones can: https://www.k-m.de/en/products/stands-and-accessories-for-instruments/wind-instruments/15045-contrabassoon-stand-black?c=158

The new ones are all black and appear to have a lot of plastic parts and has a triangular cup:

mine was used and has the small roundish black metal cup /slots. i am not sure how i am going to handle the floor peg yet. i made do with a converted guitar stand for years but wanted the real thing now. i also plan to use it for my alto clarinet as i will most likely be switching between it and bass when and if there are no alto music charts. the alto is the stepchild for concert band music afterall. thats great you brought extra stand for others in the pit. the pit is a live and learn experience and those new to it are caught off gaurd . i also have an old unbranded bass stand that is very rickity that does work with peg but i just dont trust it . good wooden vintage bass is just to expencive and hard to replace .

I use a Gord Clements folding stand for bass clarinet or bassoon. Inexpensive and sturdy, perfect for my bass clarinet. Google gordclements.com.

If you have the round cup with the slots, then fit something on the inside to keep the floor spike from slipping out.

Or use a Wolf Super Endpin or a rubber ball fitted to the end of the floor spike to prevent it sliding out the slot.

They have loads of grip even on a polished wooden floor.

If you're using the bass stand so the instrument goes in face first (logo side) into the top bracket, then the Wolf end pin can pivot in the cup without having to remove the entire instrument up and out from the stand which makes quick changes really easy. Place the stand over to the left of your music stand but with the leg with the cup placed either directly between your feet in front of you or just by the inside of your left foot if you have saxes on your right (especially tenor and bari saxes which can only go on the right), then you can bring your bass into playing position without having to lift it off the stand and then place it back quickly and effortlessly.

That Wolf endpin cover looks nice. I got a four-pack of little rubber Cello endpin covers that just slide/stretch over the end of the pin a few years ago after I got tired of the metal Selmer pin slipping around on wood floors. Not sure what I'm going to do with the other three covers, but I've been quite happy with that change. I will likely try out one of those Wolf ones sometime, if only out of curiosity.

I love my K&M stand. It has served me very reliably for years. I used to lug it in a backpack to every rehearsal and gig and it was worth the hassle.

Now I keep it set up in my office/music room full time and use a Woodwind Designs carbon stand on the road, since it fits inside my bass clarinet case. That's a huge deal for me, since I am often taking public transit to gigs and rehearsals (and hope to be doing that again soon!).

It's staggering how many people don't use stands and lay their instruments on chairs or on the floor during breaks.
