Does anyone know how the Marcas compare strengthwise against other reeds (esp. Vandorens)? Thanks.

I found that they were a little bit softer than a Vandoren reed. A 3.5 on Marca Reeds would equal about a 3 on Vandoren

Marca reeds are a grade softer than the VanDorens, but they are a lot more consistant and most can be worked on to play reasonably well. I start with #4s and use a knife as well as the Reed Wizard. Before that, I was into #51/2 VanDorens V-12s and a lot of carving. It's much easier to start with 4s, believe me. I've been using Marcas (traditional) every since Tom Ritenoir recommended them through the LeBlanc newsletter--about three years--and do all kinds of performances (classical, jazz, concert band, etc). They work for me.

I got sent some Marcs reeds once and they were like planks of wood. I usually play on a 3 or 3.5 vandoran and I could barely get a sound out the No 2 Marcas I was sent. Maybe they were old stock and mislabeled but it put me off buying Marca reeds for good.
