I've acquired a new Bb with silver plated keys. The keys are badly tarnished. I've stripped it and the pads are new - how can I polish the keys without removing the pads?

Use a silver polish cloth.
To speed up the process (keys removed from the instrument):
Cut a strip 1-3 inches wide and secure one end in a vise,
hold the other end in you hand,
rub the key up and down on the polishing cloth,
do delicate areas slowly rubbing the cloth on the key (the old fashioned way).

If you do get any polish on the pads if you accidentally catch the edge of them with the polishing cloth, use alcohol on a cotton bud/Q-tip to gently clean it - don't scrub the pad or you'll scuff it up.
