Numbers stamped on a clarinet barrel
Author: Mark Fleming

I recently bought a pile of woodwind parts and accessories in order to get one saxophone item that was pictured in the auction. I lucked out and found a couple more interesting items in the pile (for instance, finding all the parts for a complete Leblanc clarinet). Now I am putting the things I don't want or need back for sale on the web. In doing so, I've had to do quite a bit of research to figure out just what some of this stuff is. I don't want to be one of those sellers that says "I don't know nuthin about this horn thing."

Two of the clarinet barrels, one ebonite and one grenadilla, have numbers stamped on the base. One is stamped "6mm.S" and the other is "2mm.S" as the only marking. The first is ebonite and 66.5 mm and the second is grenadilla and 65 mm.

Using the stamping and "clarinet barrel" as Google search terms didn't get me anywhere. Anybody know what these numbers mean?

Mark
