Conclusion to "Differences between.."

I talked to my private teacher yesterday and he told me that when he bought the clarinet he loved it's tone but it played incredibly sharp which caused him to go through a VERY intensive tuning process where barrel was re-reemed, tone holes adjusted, placement of keys lowered... etc. I guess there's a small price to pay in order to get the best. He was shocked that i liked his clarinet so much. Also we found that in my clarinet there is a slight leak somewhere in the upper joint. It has once again been placed in the shop where i'm adding cork pads. My clarinet is starting a journey to perfection. After cork pads then keys will be adjusted and lowered to give it a "closer" feel. Right now they are at the standard level and for me that's way to big of a gap between the tone holes and the key mechanism. Newayzzz, we're off to see the wizard...

Could you elaborate please? I don't understand what lowering the keys means or how that gives the instrument a closer feel :|

I'm thinking that Keil means lowering the rings...most clarinets come with the rings around the tone holes fairly high from the body. They can be adjusted so that there's not as much distance for the fingers to travel, which facilitates rapid fingerings. I was surprised at how much difference that made for me...kind of like switching from a manual to an electric typewriter (remember those?)!

Lowering rings also affects venting and intonation....check out the scale when you get it back to make sure everything's okay.

Oh, lowering the RINGS... yes. No apology necessary, Keil, I should've known that. Thanks, Connie. It does make a lot of difference in the 'feel' of the horn. But, when you do that, please heed John's advice to carefully check the intonation... *before* you leave the shop.
