Let's see now..............1954.............no zip code back then. I do recall that there were "postal zones" but was that before or after 1954? ..............to old to remember.

Lesher makes double reeds now and used to make instruments as well. I own an oboe of theirs which is really nice.

I had a conversation this morning with a Paul Cahill from Selmer USA who phoned me out of the blue in response to an e mail I sent. He has worked for the Selmer Corporation for 25 years starting from 1976. Selmer had taken Lesher over in 1967 but kept the separate factory until 1978-79 when all the plant and tooling was moved into the main plant at Elkhardt. It is about 1979 that the Lesher name was obliterated. Their are one or two instrument makers left from the old Lesher company still working for Selmer USA the rest having retired.
I am reliably informed that the Selmer USA wooden Bassoon is made using the old Lesher tooling and wood source, which is a trade secret evidently, but the plastic bassoon is a post Lesher addition to the range and is horribly identical in every way to the UMI/Linton/Armstrong plastic torture stick.
The Lesher woodwind company also manufactured oboes. Likewise some of the tooling and expertise has passed to Selmer USA. It is amazing what information is available if somebody just chooses to answer your question. A vast improvement on Leblanc!

I know that the Lesher name apperars on double reeds. Does this have anything to do with the origonal Lesher?

Marlin Lesher (the reed maker) is out of Randolph, NY, so I doubt the two companies are directly related.
