Thanks for the link.

Dan Levinson (NY Clarinetist) had shared news of Sol's passing via Facebook, and it was wonderful to read all of the fun memories folks who played with Sol shared.

I only met Sol a handful of times myself, but he made each meeting a fun and unique experience. The first introduction to Sol was in 2004 as he was playing at the "Il Valentino" in NYC.

He had put together a five piece group the night we saw him, and during a break (in usual Sol character, while handing us one of his cards) came up and introduced himself. He inquired as to where we lived and what our names were. Upon hearing where we were from, he said he knew our hometown very well. I was shocked, and asked, "Really?!" To which he replied, "Yes, I spent a week there one night!" He then told us that he was going to dedicate a number to us in the next set.

When the moment arrived for his dedication to us, he asked us to stand up, introduced us, told everyone where we were from, and spontaneously fabricated an intricate story about being old friends of his, in town to celebrate our aniversary, and a million other falsehoods as we turned red from embarassment due to all of the attention, applause, and well-wishes from the audience (those near us were reaching to shake our hands in congratulations). He then dedicated a tune to us (unfortunately, I never wrote the title down).

We were treated like royalty for the rest of the night.

Sol created a truly magical night for us - and made us unwitting co-conspirators in his shenanigans. I'll always remember Sol as being quite the character, and am thankful for the wonderful memories we share of him.
