I have a young niece she is 11 and playing clarinet for about 1 year. She is playing a Vito LeBlanc instrument. She is using very soft reeds 1 1/2. She has tried my 3's and I can see her mouth is not there yet.
I would like to get her a new mouthpiece and ligature - is there anything I should consider for buying this for a beginner and for usage with soft reeds.
I use a Vandoren B45 would something like this be appropriate for a beginner or do I need to consider something more open or more closed etc.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

First, I'd try to get her to use a Rico or La Voz #2 or #2 1/2. 3's are a huge jump from a 1 1/2.
Just using my experience with my little brother. He was using a Rico 2. I switched his mouthpiece to a Vandoren M13 (more closed than B45), and upgraded his reed to a Vandoren V.12 #4 and he was perfectly in tune! He had only played for 3 months at the time.
There is no "cure-all", but i'd recommend a Vandoren mouthpiece.

Consider the Fobes Debut, the Hite Premiere, and the Vandoren 5RV Lyre.

When I first returned to clarinet (after a 25 year break) I started with a Selmer HS*. I Also bought a Vandoren B45 at that time, but it just seemed to make playing more difficult. 3 months later, I find the B45 easy to play, sounding better and just all round better. I'm still using the same reeds (Lurie premium #2).

I suggest (as others did for me) a Clark Fobes (a Sneezy sponsor) Debut mouthpiece. I bought my from Muncey Winds for about $27. It is an excellent beginner MP for not much $$. I started on Mitchel Luarie (sp?) #2.5 reeds - anything stronger I would not have been able to handle well. I recently tried moving to Vadoren #3 and that turned out to be to great a jump for this old man.

Interesting, Sandee I also started playing again after a 25 year break and I had an old Selmer HS* mouthpiece. After I tried the Vandoren B45 I was immediately wowed by how much easier it was for me to blow. Perhaps the 25 year old mouthpiece had some technical problem or flaw that just made it difficult for me to play.
When I tried the Vandoren I was probably about where you were at 3 months stage. So are we leading parallel lives!!! <VBG>

One of my sons is a new clarinet doubler. He chose a Vandoren 2RV and Plasticover 3.5 as easiest to play on one of our R13s.
He found the blue Vandoren 3 more difficult to play, and a 5RV also more open and difficult to keep embouchure control.
Would this be a typical new player experience? He is a 5 year sax player, SAT.
