I always played the Mozart concerto and other basset pieces seated, and held the bell between my crossed legs. People asked whether that compromised the lowest notes; but I found the effect to be minimal.
Sometimes, though, the slipperiness between the bell and my dress trousers caused me insecurity in concert, and I wondered how that might be minimised. Some way of increasing the friction between the bell and the cloth was necessary.
The final solution turned out to be the inner tube of a mountain bicycle. These inner tubes have a large diameter; and if you cut off a small cylindrical section across the tube, it can be stretched (with some effort:-) over the end of the bell.
The outcome is excellent!

British ingenuity, which, unlike American ingenuity, is usually a lot less expensive.
Market it here for lots of money (with a logo, of course), and scoop up the bucks!
(I'm thinking of marketing my own "special" rubber bands for emergency repairs. I'll be looking for a "designer" clarinet equipment seller to take it on.)

Selmer went OTT with their 10S basset clarinets by making an extra large bell complete with their floor spike fitting which is a big lump of metal, just to add extra weight for extra weight's sake.

Perhaps I should say that all my basset clarinets – two at A=430, Bb and A and one at A=440 in A – are period instruments in boxwood.
I used to have a modern Selmer, keywork rejigged by Jon Steward, but sold it to Joy Farrall. She may still have it. I think she recorded the Mozart concerto on it.

Tony,
I'm wondering if the inner tube rubber might stain or otherwise blemish the bell over time.
I once made the mistake of keeping a microphone attachment that had black rubber straps on the bell of a blackwood clarinet between seasons. The areas under the strap were discolored.
Just a thought.
