 Short barrel for the B & H 1010
Author: Tony F

Can anybody tell me if B & H made a short barrel for the 1010? My 1010 tuning is a bit marginal with the barrel I have, which is 65mm. A shorter barrel would give me a bit more wriggle room.
Thanks.

Ok, that's weird. Mine (circa 1977) are coming in at just over 64mm. The funny thing about that is that they originally had shorter barrels but I had a SHARP issue and they exchanged mine for the "longer ones." I had no idea of measurements back then, so I don't know what my originals were, nor do I know what other sizes were available.

Are you guys tuning to A=440?

With my set I bought in 1984, I got two 64s, a 63 1/2, and a 62 1/2, or that's about what they measure right now. With the shortest, which is stamped "Short" on the backside, I can get to 442. I mostly play it in rehearsals, because it takes too long to get the others up to 440. For whatever reason, the 63 1/2 is fatter, and doesn't seem to be any higher than the 64s. I think my mouthpiece is low, though. Unless mine have shrunk drastically, the 65 might be an anomaly. Every now and again, Clarinets Direct seems to have a short one available, so you might write him.

In Oz we tune to A440. Just to be sure I remeasured mine and it mikes to 64.8mm. I'll check out clarinets direct. Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried tuning with 2 1010 spec mouthpieces and they both tune the same.

In my experience, 1010 barrels varied in the bore during the 70s and 80s. Many were significantly wider than the holy 0.600".

I'm not sure whether this was by design or accident. It may have been deliberate to help intonation but would also impact pitch.

I do have a short 1010 barrel at home that I'll measure after work.

B&H made short barrels marked 'SHORT' on the back which were around 62mm.

Just checked my short barrel - 62.7mm

No SHORT marking

I checked the bore too, 15.15mm at the top and 15.20mm at the bottom, so maybe within working tolerances.

Not much use to me, I have just had my Eaton Elites refurbished. I do have some pre-war 1010s as backups.
