Working on counting out some difficult measures. How would one count out two measures in 4/4 time where the first measure is a dotted quarter, an eighth, a dotted quarter, an eighth and the second measure is an eighth, a dotted quarter tied to a half note? I have tried writing it in several ways but they seem awkward and I have usually avoided things so difficult I was never sure of. But now I wish to learn and improve instead of simply choosing the easy way. Need an outside opinion. Need to know how to say each note's count.

I may be suggesting something a little radical but I DON'T count at all. I move beat to beat (or pulse to pulse). So your first measure is just a ratio of 3 to 1, twice. The second measure is ratio of 1 to 3, then another 4.......pulses that is.
Of course if you're more comfortable tapping your foot, you have, Down, Up, Down.......UP (twice). And meas. two is: Down......Up,Down,UP (and) Down,Up,Down,Up.
Ok maybe that's more confusing.
Bottom line is that RHYTHM is one even pulse after another. Knowing whether a note starts on 2, or 3, or 2 and a half (for example) is really not important.

The notes as you described them are on the following counts: 1, and-of-2, 3, and-of-4. Second measure: 1, and-of-1 held out to what would be beat 1 of the following measure. Without actually being able to work with you in real time, this is only of very limited value, but it does answer your question.
The only thing that really matters ultimately is whether you can accurately read and perform rhythms as you come across them in the music. Work in this area with a teacher or an ensemble is invaluable in becoming fluent in rhythms. Regular real time feedback is how we acquire the skill.

You might try writing it out as all 1/8 notes with ties over the 1/8ths when a 1/4 or dotted 1/4 is needed; it might help you visualize what is happening.
And sing it before you try to play it - pitches don't matter but rhythm does.
And think about what happens in each half bar, i.e, in the 1st two beats, the next 2 beats, and again, same thing in bar 2.

Rhythms can be hard to FEEL, so actually counting them is the best way ass written from the above posts which are all correct.
Some people hate playing scales but if you can play a c major scale written the first way several times and then play it written the second way several times I think you will get the feel of these rhythms.
Dotted quarter to an 8th using a metronome and remembering that the dotted quarter gets the beat.
Then the 8th to a dotted quarter using the metronome and the 8th gets the beat. You can accent the beat or kind of pound on the 8th note to make sure it gets the beat.
I good metronome can be set to these rhythms to help you. They don't cost much.
So follow the posts above plus maybe try scales and a good metronome.
I have to confess. Sometimes you may want to throw that metronome, when you just can't get that rhythm right. I have! Glad they don't cost too much and glad they usually survive. I'm also happy that Guitar Center is 10 minutes away when I do break them. Their costs are very good and they always have something good or on sale in stock. But the reason for saying this rhythm is surely number one when playing in a group, auditioning anywhere, and just for the satisfaction of getting it right.
So your question is excellent. The answers to your questions above are excellent. I agree that if you can't say the rhythm without the horn in your mouth, you can't play it.

I will have to read carefully these comments. I usually can feel a rhythm without thinking or counting so have never really learned how, and even if have tips I see I am going to have to LEARN this skill. Even if I am told a count I am going to have to work to learn. I have written these notes' counts several different ways and none seemed correct so I posted the question hoping for someone else's replies. Appreciate the input. I was playing this and then though I "knew" how it went I was not really sure I understood the timing and the more I worked the more I knew I did not know or understand. Was just playing "at it".
This helps me see how other more experienced musicians would approach it.

Great advice Bob about saying the rhythm first! Leon Russianoff made a point of having his students do that. This also appears in Russianoff's Clarinet Method books.

I find the counting in eighth notes seems to work best for me. The frustrating part is that I KNOW the rhythm but could not seem to figure out how to COUNT it.

The process is a little confusing. After clicking the "Add Attachments," there are a number of boxes that require you to point to a file somewhere on your computer. Once that is grabbed, you just hit the "ADD" button at the lower right of that screen.
Of course as I was looking at this and going back and forth, the system locked me out of adding anything......so that can happen too.

I do all sorts of clicking, dragging, adding, copying, pasting and nothing seems to work for me. I find the counting much more successful than the posting.
UH OH ! I think I found it. You have to click PREVIEW then it allows you to search for attachment. Can't recall it all right now but finally it worked. These are what I thought were the difficult timing notes but they are much easier with practice. But I had been wondering for some time how to post as I have seen others do. Now I think I can.
Intended to post this on the posting image thread I believe. Oh well.
