So, the cellist I play trios with wants to play the quintet "Gumboots," which has a big section for bass. Haven't played bass in close to 40 years. She borrowed a school instrument for me, which turns out to be a Vito. When the idea came up, I figured I would need a better setup than I'd had when I played bass before, so I ordered a Grabner "Lawrie Bloom." He seemed to have gone to a lot of trouble designing it, and I didn't have to make a lot of choices. After that long, how do I know what facing and so on is going to work for me? Just give me something really good that will work for most people.
Got ahold of the instrument today, and tried it with a Legere Signature 2 1/2. Wow. Fantastic even sound up to screech C, without hitting the fingering chart (Gumboots goes about a fifth higher than that, which will require some research). Better tone and response than I had in the year and a half I played bass for a living on a pro Leblanc. Loud's good, soft's good, tuning's good. Makes me sound like I know what I'm doing. Not an inexpensive item, but highly recommended if you don't have a lot of time to assemble a bass setup and don't want to take any chances.

I'm quite fond of all of the Grabner Bass mouthpieces for different things, so I happen to have one of each (The LB, the Virtuoso, and the Personal models). I find I tend to go to the BB_Pers for all-rounding, the Virtuoso for low-range things, and the LB for things that tend to enter the upper range of the instrument where I want a clarinet-esque sound rather than the more-expected thin and hollow sound.
They're quite good mouthpieces, and I agree they should be recommended.

Good to know. The piece I got it for goes to super-altissimo F#, so I made the right choice. If I do more bass, I'll have to try the Personal.
