MPC designed for European Legere reeds
Author: Anon

I remember seeing something recently by a well known clarinet mpc maker (I can't remember which one since I was doing a lot of research that day) having mouthpieces designed specifically for use with the European cut Legere reeds.

Does anyone know who that is?

I'm experimenting as much as possible with these reeds to get the set up that feels and sounds the best.

Thanks!

Brad Behn's work in that area has been discussed here. I doubt if he's the only one doing that kind of customization, but he's the one we've discussed.

I assume you mean European cut? Off the top of my head Brad Behn advertises "Legere-ified" editions of his mouthpieces, as does Richard Hawkins, who is listed as a Legere artist. I think some of the higher profile Backun artists use Legere as well.

There are a number of mouthpieces out there that don't work very well with the new Legere, which probably accounts for why some people try it and find it un-workable.

Brad Behn has mentioned in a number of discussions on synthetic reeds regarding their undesirable properties, and how to mitigate them as part of the design of a mouthpiece. If you order a mouthpiece from him, you can request a customization that gives it a very cane-like experience.

Also, all of the Backun crystal lineup manufactured by Pomarico work very well with synthetics.

I'm playing a D'Addario X25E and it's really a good fit for my Légère European Cut reeds.

I meant X15E, I played X25E and X15E but settled for the X15E.

This is great info - thanks, everyone!

My main issue is that I find the Euro cut reeds to be very consistent, the intonation is troubling (flat)

I probably just haven't found the right combination yet.

I did read the other recent thread on intonation and Legeres - interesting.
