I'm checking out colleges this summer, and was wondering if any of you have some favorite clarinet professors, or colleges where you majored in music? I don't think music will be my only major but I'd like to go somewhere with lots of options. Also..has anyone had experience with the clarinet professors at Oberlin or Northwestern? Thanks for your help.

My favorite teacher was Russ Dagon, Principal Clarinet of the Milwaukee Symphony and Clarinet Professor at Northwestern. I studied with him, as a graduate music education and clarinet major, while he was in residence at the University of Wisconsin in Madison many years ago. May be wrong, but I think he is still at NU. Good luck!!!

Whoa, while we're on that note, does anyone know of any good colleges with good music programs in the South, prefereably Alabama? I would appreciate it a lot.

Dr. Kelly Burke at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is exceptional. She is a very fine teacher and has impeccable credentials: Eastman for undergrad and masters and Michigan for doctorate. And she is a VERY nice and pleasant person to work with.

In regards to your original message,
Mr. Richard Hawkins is now the head of clarinet at Oberlin Conservatory and is just amazing...I studied under him last year at Interlochen and I don't know what he cannot do?? reeds, MOUTHPIECES, clarinet repair, musicality, rhythm, everything is just as equally amazing. Good Luck!
