You name it, they play it! The reeds you buy over the counter (at least the better ones, not the plain Ricos), are used by some professional somewhere.

I teach Pete Fountain's granddaughters clarinet and saxophone lessons, and I know that Pete usually uses Marca reeds. I'm not sure what Eddie Daniels uses though.

I'm a semi-pro in the Madison, Wi area and I have used Marca #4 regular reeds for about two years now--ever since Tom Ritenoir redesigned the "cut." Prior to that, I used VanDoren V-12 #51/2 which I would work on until playable. On sax, I use anything at hand, VanDoren, LaVaz, Rico, etc.
For sound, it is usually not so much the reed that makes the difference as it is the quality of the mouthpiece being used and the strength of your embrouchure and control of your set-up. Let your inner ear guild you to the best sound you can imagine.

How does the Marca compare in strength to Vandoren?
Vandoren 3 = X Marca
Vandoren 4 = Y Marca
Vandoren 5 = Z Marca
Thanks in advance for any info.

In ED's CD THE FIVE SEASONS (released 1996), in the liner
notes it says that he plays exclusively on the Leblanc
Concerto clarinet and Vandoren reeds...
