I've started working on Baermann's Third Division, and I suspect the answer to this question is probably in one of the early volumes, which I do not have. Can anyone tell me the meaning of an asterisk followed by a dash followed by a triangle with a dot in the middle? It crops up frequently.

I think that means that your finger (perhaps its on the C sharp key?) is to remain on that key starting from the asterisk as far as the triangle with the dot in it...does that make sense for what you are playing?

I think it means to keep the right hand fingers down during those notes.

Katfish and Al are correct. It simply means to keep the right hand fingers in place.

This technique facilitates fast and accurate changes of register when you aren't going any lower than an open G.

I also want to comment that this not any music notation standard but simply Baermann's way of indicating this. The Baermann method is intended to be used under the guidance of an instructor so it may or may not be commented on in earlier volumes as the instructor would have the responsibility of telling you to use this specific technique. Baermann's marking is then simply a reminder to use this technique in these drills.

Oh! I was always mystified by that symbol also. Thanks, guys.

I call the Baermann III the "Book of Torture." Not my favorite, but it's great for technique.
