A few months back, I took the Bass Clarinet back up on an amateaur. Oddly, the biggest thing I have found myself missing after a few (4) years away from music is the ability to read key signatures.
I'd like to pick up a couple of books, and honestly Melodius and Progressive Studies Book 2 has been staring back at me for far too long.
I clearly need a scale book (pref one that breaks up the monotony a bit), and an etude book that's not quite so "French". I remember playing from and seeing a book from the "German" school which had some more melodious etudes that I enjoyed playing from, but I can't find it, probably because I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for.
The selection of clarinet method books at the local music stores is rather slim, as the all state audition selections are always a rose etude in Texas.

Try these:
Rubank series (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced Vol 1, Advanced Vol 2, and their book for transitioning to bass)
Klose
Baermann
Pares Scales
Cavallini Caprices (these are fun)
Rose 40 Studies
Rose 32 Studies
Rose 20 Grand Studies
Jean-Jean (*several* different ones available but these are all very "French")

Hello Stephen,
Another great book you might want on scales is, Buddy DeFranco's book called
"Hand in Hand with Hanon" You can get that throught his web site.
