http://www.dawkes.co.uk/yamaha+venova+saxophone.dm?catno=venova; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85_73iAm-sU; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzHasH3Acxw. So, does anyone know what possessed Yamaha to market this? And what's the purpose of the nasal vent on the top?

I don't know what possessed them but it's interesting in that it has a cylindrical bore yet overblows at the octave. The "nose" makes it open at both ends so it behaves like a flute as far as overblowing is concerned.
I don't know of any other reed instrument that works like that. It's genuinely innovative. Shame about the sound.

I bought two of them a few weeks ago. They're quite fun to play.
I've been practicing with the Venova for about a week now, and will be using it in the future to introduce my son to wind instruments (he's in K right now, still a bit too little for it).
The tone is actually quite pleasant in person, and compared to the recorder has more flexibility and range of volume. If I use my own soprano sax mouthpiece and reeds with it instead of the accompanying 4C and plastic reed, it does improve the sound quality noticeably.
