 Articulation Trouble.

I am preparing the Weber Concertino for my audition coming up which needs to be in by may 31st. I cannot get variation 2 and the technical part of the Theme up to 112, which the edition suggests, would 96 bpm be adequate for these sections for an all state audition?

You don't say what edition you're using, but the metronome markings are the editor's, and they differ from one edition to the next. So, they aren't canonical in any way and shouldn't be viewed as sacred scripture.

Probably at the level of all-state, someone else (maybe several someone elses) will play it faster than 96 bpm, and *if they play cleanly* (some will play faster but sloppily and not gain much), they will outscore you. But if 96 is the fastest you can play those passages reliably, then trying to play the printed articulations faster and completely losing control would be much more disastrous. A middle ground would be to take out some of the staccato (again, some editions have more staccato than others), adding slurs to allow a faster tempo. If you're auditioning for all-state, you must have a clarinet teacher. He or she would be your best guide toward finding articulations somewhere between slurring everything and playing too slowly to be competitive.

Of course, in the long run, you need to work on your tonguing technique to eliminate habits that are slowing you down. You may not make enough headway in a month to be secure with what you learn, so for this audition you may have to find work-arounds.
