The Hindemith bassoon Sonate has been played by a number of bass clarinet players but I can't seem to find a published part that has been transposed for bass or one where the piano is transposed down a note to compensate.
Is there such a transposition available?? It is such a gorgeous piece and works so well on the bass. Hindemith himself apparently even approved of the idea.
Thanks!

While Hindy did indeed approve, I don't think there was ever an official engraved version for bass clarinet (as there is for the trio for heckelphone/viola/piano - also beautiful).

I am performing this on March 9th and have a transcribed part as a Sibelius file. I also have an old record of Josef Horak playing it which I can't listen to until I get a new belt for my turntable... He was of course the player who first got Hindemith's permission to play it on Bass clarinet. There are some places where there are possibilities for octave transposition that may suit the Bass clarinet, and I'm curious to hear what JH did in those cases. For my performance I intend to adhere to his choices, but there's at least one place where I'm really hoping he goes down low as it sounds great and is more fun to play....
Email me if you want a sib file of the part

Donald,
That sounds great. Like you I have the old LP and also nothing on which to play it!
There is a CD of this performance too, I believe.

Part of the work on bass clarinet:

Not meaning to open an ugly can of worms, but: what are the Intellectual Property Rights associated with such a transposition?

Although Hindemith is PD in Canada, where I believe the term is life + 50 years (Hindemith died in 1963) it is still under copyright in the EU (until 2033) and in the US (at least any works published after 1923).

I can't imagine private copies of a transposition and not for sale would elicit any kind of copyright infringement. It was actually RECORDED as a transposed bass clarinet solo.

Recordings are made with a different set of rules. You actually don't need permission to record an arrangement, although royalties are still due.
