What are your thoughts on the Vandoren AT45 Bb?
I wanted to get a B45 or a M13 88 profile, but this one AT45 is priced rather well.
Should I just go out and get the B45 then the A T45?
Thanks.

Have you tried a 5RV Lyre?

I only tried one AT45 a few years before. I was’t impressed at all, the material is some kind of composite, not even molded rubber. It had the same measurements as a B45, but it was much more stuffy and dull. It was not easy to find a reed for it. This was my only experience so can’t compare it to other AT45s, but I would stay away from that. IMO almost any used Vandoren from the classic lineup is a better choice if it’s in decent condition.

Thanks for sharing your experience!! I was about to get and try one, but I asked Vandoren and told me, basically It's a B45 made out of plastic. So, I think no way plastic is better than hard rubber, that's for sure!

The M13 and B45 are very different mouthpieces. Also, they take different strength reeds. Like Chris, I would recommend trying a Vandoren 5RV Lyre.

Hello - I'm new to the forum so please forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask this question! I was a pretty good player many many moons ago in high school and have just recently got back into playing - OK - LOL - I'm 62 now. I am playing my original Buffet R13 (vintage 1973) and I'm using my B45 mouthpiece from way back then too. It looks in good shape with a some teeth dent marks but nothing horrible. My playing has come back quickly with good tone throughout the range although I do wish the high notes sounded better - a little flat and tinny. I'm using a 2.5-3 Vandoren reed blue box. Could just be that I'm rusty. Duh.
My question is has Vandoren changed the design of the B45 since the old days? Do you think I will notice a difference if I upgrade to a new mouthpiece? Which one?
Thanks!!

A new B45 will be the same basic design as yours but will have had various tweaks (quite a lot of these changes will simply be because of differences in manufacturing techniques). Your old mouthpiece may well be somewhat worn.
A new B45 may or may not play significantly differently to your B45. The only way to find out is to try one (or more than one) and see. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find shops that have a trial policy.

Different mouthpieces take different strength reeds. 2.5-3 should work for a B45. A mouthpiece that takes a harder reed might help you play the high notes in tune. To properly try out a new mouthpiece you will need a selection of reeds in various strengths.
In my shop, the Vandoren M series (mostly M13 and M13lyre) and the 5RV lyre were the biggest sellers for advancing students.
I've never been a fan of the B45.
