Brilhart Tonalin 3* Clarinet Mouthpiece for Buffet RC Bb Clarinet?
Author: Wookie001

Hi there,

can you tell me if that mouthpiece will fit on the RC model by Buffet Crampon?

and another question: I got two barrels with my clarinet, one 650 and one 660. Which frequency will they produce? is it 442 Hz and 440 Hz?

Thanks

Are you wanting to play jazz? I new Arnold well. One smart guy and one one the best sight readers I've ever played with. His MP's were more for jazz. The 1940's big band style. He lived just outside of NYC, called Great Neck. Here's the thing, I kiked his sax playing a lot better than his clarinet playing so I feel his sax mouthpieces were much better.

As for pitch it depends on the mouthpiece you pick. I'm not sure if you will be able to hit 442. It will be close. In the upper register, probably not.

440 with a 65 mm no problem, hitting 440

yeh I was looking for a mouthpiece that's good for playing jazz on the clarinet (or goes more in the Jazz direction) and read that the Brilhart Tonalin is a good choice. very interesting that you knew Arnold Brilhart personally, I wonder what's the secret of his mouthpieces, they sound great. I also play a Tonalin Tenor Sax mp.

so for 442 Hz, I would rather have to use a barrell below 65 mm?

He worked at Rico for a number of years, kind of interesting, we were hired on the same day! He designed the Rico mouthpieces with the raised rails that really never played very well and were then discontinued. But it wasn't really his fault. The molder was to blame.

We both left Rico about the same time and he passed away at 93. Lived a great life. As a performer he made a lot of money. Because of his molding experience it is said by him that he made the plastic molding device that triggered the "A" bomb to go off before the bomb hit the ground; thus causing the bomb molded device he made to trigger at a given point before impact.

I think the key to his mouthpieces were consistency. He also made a molded saxophone! A one of a kind. Who knows what happened to it after he passed away. He did have a living brother.

I cannot say we were great friends, but we had lunch often and dinner a few times, but the age difference was a lot. I was 24 when hired, he was a young 71 year old.

Hope this helps explain why you still see his mouthpieces around since the 1940's.

I should add that Buffet's were not the choice of jazz players then. Selmer's were hot and a few other brands as well. The RC may not give you that flexibility of the Selmer Center tones or the newer versions such as the 9 series or even the 10's. Bigger bores.

Yes, the Brilharts can do fine for jazz. I have also good experience with the "Special" that also has a medium facing.

I've played on vintage Brilharts for several years now. I usually use an old four digit Ebolin model, but have occasionally played a Tonalin 3*. The only tough thing about them is that, for me at least, they play lower than the Ebolins--either right at 440 or slightly under. If I could get a setup that put them a little higher, I'd probably use them more. I've sometimes thought about having a barrel made for the Tonalins...

For me, very early Ebolins (four or five digits) tend to play in a range from 440 to a shade higher. Later Ebolins (the six digit Carlsbad variety), I've found to play a little lower. They still sound great...and they vary from piece to piece, but this is a my general observation.

Of course a lot of this will depend upon the player, and the other equipment. I wouldn't want to play them on a Buffet. (I play a Selmer CT).

Vintage Brilharts are fantastic jazz mouthpieces. I honestly can't imagine playing anything else at this point. Because they were specifically made for jazz, and in an earlier era, before the American classical school of playing became so dominant in the mouthpiece market, they can quickly get you into a different sound world.

A Brilhart Tonalin on a Buffet RC? I say go for it!

I have a Tonalin 4, 4-on-table, and have found it to work well with every clarinet I've tried it on. It's especially good (perhaps even curiously so) on my Ridenour RCP-576BC--the most "legit" instrument in my rotation--so I imagine it would do just fine on a Buffet, Yamaha 650, and the like.

Eric is correct about the pitch characteristics. It's tough to get up to A=440 with the Tonalin on a Backun Alpha.
