Hey,
I tried some mouthpieces at the Long and Mcquade and played the VD4W and loved the sound! The only problem is that it wouldn't fit on my barrel and they needed to squeeze it onto a slightly larger buffet barrel. I couldn't even get it off the barrel after I tried. That being said I still loved the sound and want to get a barrel that will better adapt the VDW4 (or 2 or 6) to my Yamaha 650 upper joint. The tenon is 22.40 mm diameter on the mouthpiece and I crudely measured my upper joint to be about 23 mm.
If anyone knows of a good barrel that can adapt from a 22.4 diameter (that isn't too tight) to a 23 mm diameter (also not too tight).
PS. I also know Backun Barrels are quite popular. If they help with getting the dark creamy German sound I like then can someone give me information on that?
Thanks very much,
Josh Miller

Why not ream out the mouthpiece socket a bit on your favorite (or is that favourite?) barrel to accept the German mouthpiece? 30 seconds with a Dremel tool and sanding drum should do the trick.

The VD4 comes in 2 sizes: S and W. The S fits into normal French barrels and would be the preferred solution. Can you change it yet?
Wurlitzer sells a barrel for German mouthpieces to French clarinet. More expensive and of course affects sound and intonation.
Otherwise you could work on the mouthpiece tenon reducing its diameter. It is not that difficult with some hand tools.
