 Trying to seek explanation
Author: WhitePlainsDave

My clarion D flat has been more prone to squeaking until I've angled the clarinet further from my body: not that anyone would have described the angle at which I previously held the clarinet relative to my body particularly small (acute). Nor is the angle I'm at now noticeable large: it was a small angle change.

I suspect this increased angle allows me to remain on the other side of a threshold where this D flat may squeak. What I'm interested in knowing is if this note is more susceptacle to slight pinching causing squeaking and why.

Thanks

Not for me. Do you maintain the same angle once you've passed Db going into the altissimo register? Does the advantage of the increased angle continue for higher notes?

This sounds familiar.

Well, the question is slightly different. Same answer as before, normally that note isn't by itself problematic. If it's not a problem with the particular instrument, it's something you're doing.

Yes Phillip...same question but now having just figured out (as you point out) what remedies it for me I sought to find explanation for why my solution seems to be working for me.

Karl: I maintain the new angle consistently. Other notes have not now or before presented issue for me.

It's almost certainly a hardware problem. Make sure the crow's foot isn't rubbing against the two lower right-hand little finger keys. Also, check the pad seating and spring strength on the Ab/Eb key, which may be blowing open.
