I am looking for good clarinet duet books for my father and I for a birthday present for him (a little over a month from now). We have often found it difficult to find the right duet books, because we are at drastically different skill levels these days. He was who got me started on clarinet 10 years ago, and we have been playing together on and off that whole time. For the past 25 years or so, he has only played when I play with him, which hasn't been as often as either of us would like (~10 times a year at most). I am headed off this next year to college as a performance major, and since he is pretty out of practice, we are at very different skill levels. He still has decent range, but complicated or fast rhythms are problems for him, since he is out of practice. I'd say he is about at the level of an average high school sophomore or junior; someone who is competent on the instrument, but never takes the time to practice.

I am looking for music that will be playable for him, without being extremely basic song books that might bore me. We love playing with each other, but it would be nice for neither of us to get frustrated with the difficulty of the music we are playing. I'm happy to play music much below where I'm at, because I know I can focus on tone and such, but I'd prefer something more technical, as that is where I am most lacking at this point.

Any recommendations for duets? If it helps, he loves Klezmer, Baroque, and Gypsy Jazz (Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, etc.), but I think we would both be happy to play anything together, as long as it is at the right skill level and well written.

There's quite a selection here http://www.vcisinc.com/clarinetmusicduets.htm#Clarinet_Duets

The two Selected Duets volumes (Rubank - Voxman) are excellent; vol 1 is easy, vol 2 considerably harder. (both are 'classical' music).

I was impressed by the number of blues & jazz offerings. Look at the James Rae titles - they might be exactly what you're looking for.

Some of the Mozart "Kegelduette" clarinet versions might be interesting as well:

Kegelduette, all 12 of them! Technically deceivingly easy, musically rewarding, just Mozart in nuce. We love playing them on flute (1st) and clarinet (2nd, still a bit easier).
