 Moennig Barrel?
Author: Jim Lee

I just purchased a Buffet Festival clarinet and have been told that the barrels that came with the instrument are Moennig taper. How do I check this?

Essentially, the bore is bigger at the top (mouthpiece end) than the bottom.

.589" at top, .579" at bottom. (14.96mm/14.71mm).

You would need a Vernier gauge caliper to read this, tricky if it doesn't have a dial gauge or digital read out.

Most of the Moenning taper barrels will have "Moenning" imprinted below the Buffet stencil.

Be advised that the top end is still pretty small compared to the exit bore of some mouthpieces. My Fobes didn't like either the Moenning or Chadash 65mm barrels I used.

If it is a Buffet barrel, it will say "Moennig" as Anji just said. If not, it may not be a Moennig. But, do the math and measure and see. Moennigs are fantastic. The first thing I do with a new instrument is to purchase one for it. They add to the power and color of the sound and help intonation. They have a darker sound than the stock barrels. But, the Buffet barrels usually are clearly stamped in gold under the Buffet label "Moennig."
