Hi all,
Just bought Walter Grabner's Lawrie Bloom bass clarinet mouthpiece. Seems very responsive, but a little fuzzy. I know it's not the piece - it's gotta be the reed. It's a #3 Vandoren V12. Too soft, probably. Also has a Rovner ligature.
What's your setup with this piece? Wondering what reeds to get, since I'm not getting the best sound with the V12s.

We just had a discussion about this not long ago - I had asked a similar question because of issues I was having with squeaking and insecure response. Walter Grabner's response is at http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=435258&t=435243 and there are also some good comments in the thread by several others.
You should click on the link and go to the thread, but Walter's own recommendation, which he uses on that mouthpiece, is a #3-1/2 V12 or a #3-1/2 Legere.

One thing to consider in reed strength is how high you have it on the mpc. I play mine high to do what I want, and use Gonzalez 3 if I want to sound more mellow and less 'buzzy', or for a long rehearsal or traditional brash Bass Clarinet sound, a V12 2-1/2.
Also on the fuzziness, I move the tip end of the (slightly loose) reed on the mpc a little to the left then the right with my right hand thumb while I play notes on different registers, leaving the reed where the response is optimal, then tighten the ligature as you normally do.

I did, thanks! A stiffer reed did the trick. Now it has a strong and easy sound. Great piece!
