 Good mouthpiece for returning player
Author: Cajun clarinet

Hello all! I am returning to playing the clarinet after a 20 year hiatus. I'm seeking recommendations on good mouthpieces that won't break the bank. I'm currently leaning toward the Fobes Debut, but any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Fobe Debut is good, most vandorens are good. Try whichever ones you can and pick the one you like the most. If you can't try any of them just get the debut

The clarinet ( LeBlanc Esprit ) came with a Vandoren B45 and a Rovner C-1R ligature. I find the B45 a little too resistant, maybe because my chops aren't what they used to be! The town I live in has no music store, so I will see if any of the stores in Lafayette allow mouthpiece trials. Thanks for the feedback!

What strength reed are you using with the B45, being a more open mpc.

The Fobes Debut plays great. It has great response, tone and tuning, is reed friendly and is a fraction of the cost of many mouthpieces that don't play nearly as well.

Right now I'm using Mitchell Lurie 2.5.

Another vote for the Debut. Almost all my beginning students play on this mouthpiece, and then in high school it becomes their marching band mouthpiece. It's always good to have a cheap dependable back-up. I even use one myself once in awhile because it plays well with Legere reeds.

Later, when you've redeveloped your embouchure you can choose something more sophisticated, but if you are just coming back it's best to start with something middle of the road and decent and wait to play test things until you are back in shape.

Debut. Try a Vandoren Blue box #3.0.
A Fobes Nova is also excellent, if you want something a bit better than the Debut.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I'm going to go with the Debut. My next question was going to be about reed recommendations but Paul beat me to it!

The Debut is great. Also give Brad Behn's Overture model a try! These are the two models I start all my beginners on these days.

I'll add yet another recommendation for the Fobes Debut. The Ridenour Encore and Gennusa Mezzo are also worth considering.

The Fobes is a really efficient mouthpiece--one can get a nice, robust tone with little air support. The one I had worked great with a Rovner 1R ligature, too.

I found that Vandoren Traditional and V12 reeds, as well as Mitchell Lurie standard cut, worked nicely on the Fobes Debut. You could audition the Debut with your Mitchell Lurie 2.5's and go up in strength as needed. It has a close tip opening, so you'll be able to use harder reeds sooner as you build your chops.
