 Where to practice

Playing in the bathroom makes any reed sound beautiful and playing in the closet makes your tone sound dead. Is there a good place in the house to practice to improve tone? I would imagine if you can make yourself sound good in a dead room you will sound amazing during performances. Or maybe it doesn't matter at all and I'm overthinking things :P

No, you're spot on. However, the bathroom is a series of highly reflective surfaces. What you here is a lot of reverberation that covers up the dead spots in your sound. The best place to practice is a dead room. YOU make it come alive with the use of dynamics.

I do sympathize though. One of my early teachers used a den in his house that was completely covered in rugs and fluffy furniture to deaden sound. I sounded so much worse there then I did at home practicing in a more live room. Now though I am ecstatic to use a Wenger module or equivalent because it forces you to make music.

I agree entirely with Paul.
An addtional factor that is important to me is that in real life playing you are extremely unlikely to find yourself having to perform in an acoustic that is worse than what you are used to practicing in.

I can assure you that it is an un-nerving experience the first time you find yourself having to perform in an unfamiliar and unsympathetic acoustic (think Mozart quintet in a rose garden - yes it did happen to me).

For the most part we play in larger rooms than we practice in. Vary your practice room on occasion with this in mind.
