 Selmer 10G bell replacement
Author: jazzy701

I have a Selmer 10G bought new in roughly 1983. I need to replace the bell due to cracks going through the bell and also small chunks of wood missing near the metal ring. I am having trouble finding a 10 G bell on eBay. I'm not sure about Backun bells. Are there any other brand bells suitable for my Bb? I saw one on eBay called an Antigua Backun and also a Protege. I'm not excited about spending $500 for a Backun bell. I also would like another barrel for the horn. I saw a review that a Fobes barrel would be good for the Selmer 10 G. I would need to get a 66mm because My 65 in symphony is always sharp. The throat tones on the horn are always sharp as well. I assume it's ok to have a different barrel brand than bell? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Julie

I wish you well on your hunt for the Bell. That will be a tough one, although I believe a standard Selmer Series 10 B-flat bell would do the trick, and should be easy to find.

For the barrel - I play a Series 10G for my A clarinet, my B-flat is an extremely wonderful Series 10, set up by Brannen Woodwinds of Evanston, Illinois. I have several Fobes barrels for these - and Mr. Fobes does make a difference between the B-flat and A barrels, many other manufacturers do not. I really like his Hard-Rubber Lined Cocobola barrel on the B-flat, while I prefer his Grenadilla barrel on the A.

pacificwinds6875, a seller on that auction site, has 10G parts available often. I'd keep checking there. I've bought a few 10G barrels from him. It is Morrie Backun's place in Canada. Be patient. I'm sure one will become available soon.,

Ken,

Thanks you for the information concerning the clarinet bell and Fobes barrel. I had a question for you concerning the barrel. Your recommendation is the Fobes cocobolo (rubber lined). It is about $75 more than the grenadilla on Woodwind/Brasswind. My Selmer 10g came with a 65mm barrel (usually have to pull out a bit). I bought a 66mm 10g barrel that doesn't fit well. After you put it on snug, it is very hard to pull off. My clarinet can tend to be a little flat with 66 mm, but barely. I believe it is more due to the fact that my bell is cracked, and that is causing the intonation. Don't you think? I still want to try the Fobes. All of the newer clarinets have a 66mm barrel, so I believe that is what I should get. But what is your opinion on the 66? I play with a Backun $400 Mouthpiece and BG ligature.

Thanks,
Julie Thaxton

Julie -

The early 10G clarinets came from the factory with a Hard-Rubber lined barrel! The Fobes fits very well on my 10G, and quite well on the other Series 10 horns I have. I use a 66 on the A, and a 66 on the B-flat. I also have the Cocobola Hard-Rubber lined in 66 & 65. I use the 66 more in Symphonic and Chamber work. The 65 gets a lot of use in Wind Ensemble work, where a wee bit more flexibility comes in handy. Possibly your issue is the bell, but I can't see that effecting the horn over the entire range.

I've never tried the Backun mouthpiece, but have many colleagues that I highly respect that love them. I have tried his barrels and bells, and really was not impressed all that much.
