This is a video of "Cotton Tail" from 1988 featuring Mel Torme on the drums with Ken Peplowski on tenor. At the 3 minute mark, he plays an extended clarinet solo.

He will be performing at the Detroit Jazz Festival on Labor Day weekend along with Anat Cohen, Eddie Daniels, and Paquito D'Rivera. Dave Bennett will also be appearing. What a line up!

Mel was one heck of a good musician in anything he did. Ken sounds terrific, as always.

If I had a lifestyle that would afford me flying someplace for the weekend on a whim, that would be one of those weekends. Quite a line-up, indeed!

Of course Ken is great, no question. But I always forget that Mel Torme also played drums and did an amazing job. Torme's musical instincts are right on the money. He could have been one of the great drummers of all time if that singing thing hadn't gotten in the way.
