How much does a reed change the perception of your sound? For example, out of a box of 10 reserve classic reeds, I find that only around 1 or 2 sound excellent, wheras the others sound airy or feel very resistant. Obviously a reed doesn't change your fundamental sound, however it does effect the overtones you hear and how you play in effect. What do you experience with this and why do think it is?

The reed and how you manipulate AIR....... ARE YOUR SOUND.
Broken in properly, a box of reeds should yield at least 6 pretty good reeds (I practice with 8 to 9 out of a box though I rely on 5 to 6 for critical rehearsals and performances).
It is possible that you are using a strength that is slightly too hard for you (airy and resistant reeds). I would suggest going down a half strength or more. You want to hit a mean strength where some are a bit weak and a few are a bit strong but most are just right.

* Do you expose your reeds to limited play and water until they are broken in (i.e. what I suspect Paul means when he says "broken in properly")?
* Do you incorporate methods for their adjustment, such as ATG, which I firmly believe will give you more playable reeds from a box?

I agree, you have to learn how to break in and adjuct your reeds to get more playable good reeds. I have some good tips on my webpage for you to look at if you're interested. Free advise. As far as perception goes, unless a reed is extremely harder or softer than you're comfortable with you will pretty much sound the same. You may sound a bit brighter, darker, etc than you're used to but your basic sound will still be there because you will adjust to the reed up to a point.
